Press Release - Sun shines on Heeley

Once more it is a Sheffield based social enterprise initiative that is at the cutting edge of energy conservation. Recovery Insulation (INNO-THERM), a building thermal insulation material used as an alternative to conventional insulation materials such as Rockwool and fibre glass products, has just been specified for use in the roofs and walls of new Anns Grove School, Heeley, currently under construction.

Recovery Insulation (INNO-THERM) is a safe and sturdy alternative to conventional thermal insulation materials. It is manufactured from recycled cotton and denim from the textile industry. That it uses recycled material in manufacture it reduces the amount of material going to landfill. It also contains no irritants and does not release harmful fibres into the air when handled it eliminates the need to wear breathing equipment and protective clothing during installation and so reduces the risk of harm to workers. It does not use phenolic foam and resins that contribute to ozone depletion as in many conventional insulation products. Recovery Insulation (INNO-THERM) is safe for the user to handle and for the environment.

Anns Grove School is also to incorporate recycled structural timbers and will maximise the use of timber which is a naturally renewable material. The design will make best use of natural light and ventilation and the principle of thermal mass using concrete will be exploited to act as a thermal sink. Inter-active teaching and learning resources using Recovery Insulation (INNO-THERM) and other sustainable building products are being developed in association with the Schools & Homes Energy Education Project and it is planned for inclusion in the school curricula.

The use of Recovery Insulation (INNO-THERM) at Anns Grove School is a significant step towards the aim of supplying it to a wider user group, such as Contractors, Local Authorities and home-owners for the DIY market. Recovery Insulation (INNO-THERM) is currently imported from the USA but the primary aim of Recovery Insulation Ltd. is to develop a manufacturing base in this area which will eventually reduce costs, affect volume of textile going into landfill and provide employment for local people. In order to achieve this aim it is necessary to establish sufficient demand and it is hoped that significant numbers of environmentally-conscious people will be interested in buying the product.

Recovery Insulation Ltd. is just one of the current projects of the Schools & Homes Energy Education Project. The main focus of the Schools & Homes Energy Education Project is in energy efficiency and renewable energy education to include:

  • Design and supply of educational solar-powered car and boat kits
  • Workshops on energy efficiency, renewable energy and sustainable development.
  • Training courses in partnership with Energy Project at Heeley City Farm, to design and construct solar thermal water heating panels for households
