Teacher Information - National Curriculum learning objectives which 'INNO-THERM' can fulfill

Key Stage 2

Pupils should be taught:

"that it is important to test ideas using evidence from observation and measurement"

Test the idea that insulation keeps houses warmer, measure using thermometers, alter depth of insulation?

"make a fair test or comparison by changing one factor and observing or measuring the effect while keeping other factors the same"

"must control for thickness of material, size of room etc"

"use simple equipment and materials appropriately and take action to control risks"

Risk associated with using heat source etc

During the key stage, pupils should be taught the knowledge, skills and understanding through:

"a range of domestic and environmental contexts that are familiar and of interest to them"

"looking at the part science has played in the development of many useful things"

Look at heating bill with and without insulation

Key Stage 3: Science

Pupils should be taught:

"about possible effects of burning fossil fuels on the environment for example, production of acid rain, carbon dioxide and solid particles and how these effects can be minimised"

Insulation means less energy is needed to heat a house, therefore fewer fossil fuels are needed

"how energy is transferred by the movement of particles in conduction, convection and evaporation, and that energy is transferred directly by radiation "

Try using INNO-THERM as an insulating material when it is wet and when it is dry - what state gives the greatest insulation, why?

During the key stage, pupils should be taught the knowledge, skills and understanding through:

"a range of domestic, industrial and environmental contexts"

"considering ways in which science is applied in technological developments"

As in ks2 look at fuel bills with and without insulation

" considering the benefits and drawbacks of scientific and technological developments, including those related to the environment, health and quality of life"

Opportunity to look at more hazardous forms of insulation such as rockwool etc

Design and Technology: Knowledge and understanding of materials and components

Pupils should be taught:

" to consider physical and chemical properties and working characteristics of a range of common and modern materials"

What are suitable insulation materials, why?, sustainability, environmental effects.

" consider aesthetics and other issues that influence their planning [for example, the needs and values of intended users, function, hygiene, safety, reliability, cost] "

Safety of material, installation, cost comparison?
